Havana - Fidel Castro confirmed that he had resigned from the top leadership of the Communist Party of Cuba in an article on Tuesday, after the Party approved a series of economic reforms.
"Raúl knew that I would accept no formal role in the party today," Castro said in an article on the portal Cubadebate.cu reference to his brother Raúl and his own absence from the party new Central Committee, elected on Monday.
Castro, 84, was first Secretary in the Central Committee of the party-the Communist Government of State-since 1965, the Party supported.
Fidel said he handed over the party leader Raul had the functions when he because of their own 2006, transferred to his brother deteriorating health in the year although he retained the first Secretary title.
Fidel "(Raul) always has been, which I described as first Secretary and Commander in Chief," wrote in the article.
"He never failed me the ideas connect, scheduled," he added.
The move came after the sixth Congress of the Communist Party a flood of measures on Monday aimed at, hold approved Cuba's economy collapse, but without any wide embrace of economic change market-oriented.
The changes include a minimum on the open market in the island economy before the vote, expected Tuesday officially to relieve the 84 year old Castro of his position as party leader after more than four decades.
