When the Olympics are over, the stadium and sport facilities remain. Some get repurposed, but others are painful memories of huge investment. The playing field level, an architect is a design for floating, reusable Olympic facilities.
"Almost 90 percent of the Nations of the world cannot afford to, to build not only the Olympic Games - for major sporting events", said Michael Burt, Emeritus Professor of architecture at the Technion Israel Institute of technology.
Inspired Burt facilities, including a stadium, which could be transported along waterways and berthed in major port cities of artificial structures for marine environments, developed a conceptual array of Olympic.
The design requires a stadium that can hold 150,000 viewers as "Modules", the auxiliary sports facilities, accommodations, administrative and Office would contain. That would separate modules in considered to be as needed. Once in place, providing a robust archipelago would make accessible by walkways. Spectators and athletes could enter from a fixed Pier, a pontoon bridge, a ferry, or some combination.
"Not all modules participate in the event," said Burt. "It is flexible and can be arranged on more than a way."
One had infinite polyhedral lattice form based on a structural surface that Burt and two others originally patented in the 1980s the building. The grid trusses are multi-layered, low density bar and joint of steel and connections made. According to Burt was a 650-square-foot chip made from less than 90 pounds of steel and covered with lightweight material. He said the floating total cost of a single plant to the amount of the materials used would depend on.
Burt compares the Olympic Games to a wedding, argues that it not make sense to create a new reception hall for a single event. Instead, he said of the array, "so a complex often a year could be re-used."
The architect thinks there could be multiple Olympic arrays, including one that Europe in the first place is used. Burt said that he has discussed the idea at a Conference, when a Chinese engineer possibility raised an array only for China.
End of March Burt presented the concept to the technology, know and society Conference in Bilbao, Spain. Ask who is responsible for investments, maintenance and operation were the array hurdles remain. Despite presented the plan at international conferences on does not have many years, or Burt's vision in motion was set.
"Something running to see, you really a completely different character have," he admitted to. "I am not a pusher."
Sean foreman, Assistant Professor of political science at Barry University in Florida the resources for the sports stadiums and arenas, said that with larger development goals Olympic bids are made. He referred repurposed on Olympic stadiums for the home team.
"There is much symbolism and the propaganda for the city to these wonderful facilities show", he said. The concept would work better for an Olympic village as a stadium, he added.
Foreman sees additional challenges to Burt's idea, including the risk of piracy. However, he said a mobile facility in the event of a natural disaster, could be spared in the light of the fact that there is enough warning to move.
"Logistically, it would be useful, a device reuse, used only once very two or four years" he said.
